It is responsible for carrying out archeological surveys. It is also responsible for protecting and preserving all Indian archeological sites and monuments and the promotion and protection of all Indian archeology.

ASI was founded in 1861 by Alexander Cunningham. but, It was established as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on 2 March 1885 under the supervision of the British Archaeological Society. It replaced the Antiquaries of India. It was renamed the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) on 1 April 1936.
