The Full Form of RTI: Right to information
RTI Stands for Right to information. The Right to Information Act was enacted in 2005 against corruption, which was called the Right to Information.
The organization aims to reduce corruption in the country and provide the public with information about government work. This act enhances transparency between the government and the public.
Any citizen can get information about any department of the government and its related work through the online website sitting at home.
According to this act, a common citizen has been given the right to get information from the government department. But keep in mind that the information asked should be based on evidence and not on rumors.
The Law of RTI provides rights that you can ask for any kind of information from the government, take a copy of it, check government works and documents, and take samples of the substances of government work.
You can ask how much money came for the development works and how much was spent on these development works.
Regarding this act, any Indian citizen can take any information from any government or non-government department. The government department has to respond to this RTI within 30 days.
What is the Section of RTI
- Section 6(1) – There is a section for writing an RTI application.
- Section 6(3) – If your application has gone to the wrong department. so that department. It will be sent to the right department under section 6(3) within 5 days.
- Section 7(5) – According to this section, BPL card holders do not have to pay any RTI fee.
- Section 7 (6) – According to this section, if the RTI reply is not received within 30 days, then the information will be given free of cost.
- Section 18 – If any officer does not respond, then his complaint should be given to the information officer.
- Section 8 – According to this, that information will not be given in the RTI which is a threat to the integrity and security of the country or affects the internal investigation of the department.
- Section 19(1) – If your RTI reply is not received within 30 days. So according to this section, you can make the first appeal to the first appellate authority.
- Section 19 (3) – If the answer to your first appeal is not received, then with the help of this section, you can make a second appeal to the officer within 90 days.

- You can ask for a copy of any government document.

RTI Filing Online Process
There are two modes of filing RTI, one is (i) online application process and second (ii) offline application process. Let’s know How to file RTI online? Follow the steps given below to file RTI online:
- Go to the official website of RTI Online.
- Click on the ‘Apply’ tab given on the homepage.
- Now a page will open in front of you in which guidelines will be given.
- After reading this guideline, tick the box “I have read and understood the above guidelines” and submit.
- A new page will appear now. You will need to enter your e-mail address and your phone number to receive SMS messages.
- Now fill in the given captcha code in the box next to ‘Enter Captcha Code’ and submit.
- A new window will open with the RTI application page. Please fill out the following fields in English.
- It is mandatory to fill the columns with a star ( * ) symbol.
- You can write only 500 words (3000 characters) in the box provided for applying for an RTI request.
- If your application contains more than 500 words then upload the PDF file of the application in the option given below.
- Finally, enter the captcha code and submit.
Remember key points while applying RTI
- If you are not a BPL card holder, then you will have to pay Rs 10 as a fee. The application process is absolutely free for BPL card holders.
- For this, the applicant will have to provide the details of the BPL card, such as the BPL card number, year of issue, and issuing authority.
- Apart from this, if there is any other document related to the application, then you can also upload it in the form of a PDF.
How to file RTI offline?
- First of all, find out the department for which you want to file RTI.
- Now where the application is being made, apply in writing or electronically in Hindi, English, or the official language of the region along with the prescribed fee.
- You can also take the help of a Public Information Officer to write the application.
- The application should be addressed to the concerned State or Central Public Information Officer.
- The question in the application made by you should be clear and detailed along with your personal details like name, address, contact number, etc.
- If you are a BPL card holder, you can apply for free by showing the relevant documents. For all others, the application fee of Rs 10 has been fixed.
- The application can be submitted through e-mail at the office or in person.
- A receipt will be given to you after the acceptance of the application. Keep a copy of this receipt and application safe with you.
- After the receipt of the application, it is mandatory for the Central Public Officer to respond within 30 days, and if the information sought threatens the life and liberty of any person, then the time limit is 48 hours.
Rules for applying RTI
For filling out the RTI application form, you must meet the following criteria.
- Applicant must be a citizen of India.
- The question asked in the application should be clear and detailed.
- The application should be accompanied by proof of payment of the application fee.
- The applicant’s address should be available for sending the reply to the application.
- No personal information is required to be given or sought by the Public Information Officer (PIO) except the personal details required to contact the applicant.

The following steps will guide you through checking the status of your RTI application:
1. Visit the official website of RTI and click on ‘View Status’
2. Now a page will open in front of you, here enter your registration number in the first box.
3. Enter your e-mail address in the second box.
4. Now fill in the captcha code and click on submit.
5. You will see the status of your application and the action taken on your application.
Does RTI apply to everyone?
The RTI Act is applicable in all the states and union territories of India. Including NGOs and all other bodies owned, controlled, and substantially financed by the government, Central RTI covers all bodies constituted under the constitution or any statute or government notification.
Is RTI applicable to private bodies?
A government-owned and -controlled private company or joint venture that is substantially financed by the government is directly covered by RTI. Other private companies are covered indirectly by RTI,
The RTI Act allows government departments to obtain information from private bodies in the same way that the RTI Act allows common citizens to obtain information from those bodies.
