The history behind the LED
LEDs were first discovered in 1907 with the discovery of electroluminescence by British scientist H.J.Round at Marconi Labs.
Gary Pittman and Robert Biard were working at Texas Instruments in 1961 when they were conducting their experiments. Their discovery that gallium arsenide emits infrared radiation when exposed to electrical current led to the invention of infrared LEDs.
In 1962, the first visible light LED (red) was introduced. It was developed by Nick Holonyak Jr. By. when he was working at General Electric. The light-emitting diode was invented by Holonyak, which is why he is also known as the “father of the LED”.
Then in 1972, M George Craford, who had once been a student of Holonyak, introduced yellow LEDs and increased the output of red and red-orange LEDs by a factor of 10.
Working Principle of LED
In semiconductor technology, a light-emitting diode has two leads. This diode emits light when activated due to its p-n junction. Electrons in this device are recombined with electron holes when there is a suitable voltage applied to the device’s leads.
