What is MCB Full Form, Meaning, And Definition

On this page, We are going to learn about the full form of MCB and the meaning of MCB, As well as the meaning, definition, abbreviation, and acronym for MCB in different categories. So you should read this post till the end.

The Full Form of MCB – Miniature Circuit Breaker

MCB Stands for Miniature Circuit breakers. MCB is a power-sensitive electronic used in high-current applications to provide a high degree of overcurrent protection.

In simple terms, MCB is a special type of fuse that is smaller than a normal fuse. an MCB is a switch that protects the entire circuit and other electronic home appliances such as a light bulb, radio, fridge, or another similar device.

MCB circuit breaker that is much smaller than a standard breaker size, such as 14-20 amp or 20-30 amp. This type of breaker is commonly used in circuit boxes that are difficult to access,

Such as in the attic, or in areas of a house that do not have an electrical panel. Miniature Circuit Breaker has no effect on a standard breaker box. They are simply a smaller, more compact option.

How Does Work MCB

MCB is an automatic electronic switch that functions or works like a fuse. When the amount of current in a circuit becomes too high, the MCB automatically shuts off, which can prevent short-circuit damage to the electrical circuit.

After a while, we can start it again. There are many types of components used To assemble a Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) that as follows-

  • Body
  • Plunger
  • Load Terminal
  • Arc Chamber
  • Tripping Lever
  • Fixed Contact
  • Operating Knob
  • Supply Terminal
  • Magnetic Element
  • Operating Mechanism
  • Bi-Metallic Strip

What is Tripping in MCB

There are two types of tripping inside MCB. Which is known as Over Load Current Tripping and Short Circuit Tripping, Due to this tripping function, it shuts down in case of overload. But for both these tripping, two different components are installed in MCB.

  • Over Load Current Tripping

The Bimetal Strip used in MCB is made by mixing two metals. When a load of current on the MCB increases, one metal expands more than the other,

Due to this, it becomes Bimetal Strip Bend. And it pulls the Tripping Lever with it. Due to this the MCB trips and the transmission of electricity in the electrical circuit stop before a short circuit occurs.

  • Short Circuit Tripping

Any equipment in the electrical circuit is tripped by this type of MCB, even if there is no fault. It is based on the principle of a magnetic field. Inside the Short-Circuit Tripping is a solenoid coil.

When a short circuit occurs in the solenoid coil, a large number of magnetic fields are produced.
The Plunger inside it is being pushed forward. As a result, the Tripping Lever can be used for more than just this push and MCB trips.

Types of Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCB)

  • Type B MCB

This type of MCB tripping takes place between 3 to 5 full load currents. B Type MCB is used in residential and light commercial applications, as well as PLC wiring with very low-pressure loads, and computer and electronic equipment.

  • Type C MCB

Type C MCBs have a full load current of 10 amps. As a result, it trips when a current of 50 to 100 amperes passes through it.

  • Type D MCB

Type D MCBs have a full load current of 10 amps. As a result, it trips when the current flows between 100 and 200 amperes.

  • Type K MCB

Type D MCBs have a full load current of 10 amps. As a result, it trips when a current of 100 to 150 amperes passes through it.

  • Type Z MCB

Type D MCBs have a full load current of 10 amps. As a result, it trips when 20 to 30 amps of current pass through it.
