The Full Form of LCM – Least Common Multiple
LCM Stands for Least Common Multiple. The lowest common multiple, also known as the least common multiple or least common denominators, is the smallest number that can be divided evenly into all of the numbers.
For example, the least common multiple of 7 and 12 is 6, because 6 is divisible by 2 and 3 with exactly the same frequency as 7.
On the other hand, the least common multiple of 7 and 13 is 28, because 28 is divisible by 2 and 3 with a frequency of 2, but not 7.
This is because while 7 and 13 both have 3 as a factor, 3 is a more common factor for numbers 2 and 4 than for 7 and, therefore, 28 is a better least common multiple for 7 than 13.
- The LCM is an important concept in elementary school math, but many students are unaware of the formula for calculating the LCM, which is A = (B × C) ÷ D,
- where A is the LCM, B is the first number, C is the second number, and D is the sum of the two numbers.
- The LCM is useful for finding the total of a group of numbers,
- such as when finding the total cost of a group of students’ school supplies. LCMs can also be used to find the lowest common multiple of two numbers.
