History of ISRO

  • 1962 – A national committee was formed by the Department of Atomic Energy for space research. And the development work for the rocket launch was started in Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • 1963 – The first rocket was launched from Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram on 21 November 1963.
  • 1965 – The “Centre for Space Science and Technology” was established at Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • 1967 – “Satellite Communication System Center” was established in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • 1972 – Space Commission and Department of Space were established.
  • 1975 – On 19 April 1975, India launched its first satellite with the help of Russia. The name of this satellite was Aryabhata. It was named after the great mathematician Aryabhata.
  • 1976 – Experimental steps taken for the first time for education through satellite.
  • 1979 – Bhaskar-1, an experimental satellite, was launched.
  • 1980 – Rohini satellite was successfully placed in orbit with the help of SLV-3.
  • 1981 – Successfully launched a geological communication satellite named ‘Apple’. And in November this year Bhaskar-2 was also launched.
  • 1982 – INSTAT-1A was launched in April
  • 1984 – “Rakesh Sharma” has the distinction of becoming the first Indian astronaut in a joint space mission by India and the Soviet Union.
  • 2000 – INSTANT-3B was successfully launched on 22 March 2000.
  • 2002 – INSAT-3C was successfully launched in January. Kalpana-1 was successfully launched by PSLV-C4 in September.
  • 2004 – GSLV Edusat was successfully launched.
  • 2008 – “Chandrayaan” successfully launched on 22 October
  • 2013 – “Mangalyaan” was successfully launched on 5th November
  • 2014 – Geostationary Satellite Launch (GSLV-D5) was successfully launched on 5 January. On 24 September, Mangalyaan (298 days after launch) was placed in the orbit of Mars.
  • 2015 – On 29 September, it successfully launched AstroSat, India’s first observatory dedicated to astronomical research.
  • 2016 – On 23 May, it launched its first reusable space shuttle completely built in India. 22 June: 20 satellites were simultaneously launched on PSLV C-37. August 28: The first successful pilot test of a scramjet engine with an atmospheric propulsion system was conducted. 8 September 2016: INSAT-3DR was put into space for the first time with the successful flight of GSLV-F05 using an indigenously developed Cryogenic Upper Stage (CUS).
  • 2017 – ISRO launches 108 satellites and sets a world record.
  • 2019 – Chandrayaan-2 was successfully launched.
