The Full Form of MOSFET Meaning, and Definition

On this page, We are going to learn about the full form of MOSFET and the meaning of MOSFET, As well as the meaning, definition, and acronym for MOSFET in different categories. So you should read this post till the end.

Full Form of MOSFET: Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor

MOSFET Stands for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor. MOSFET is a three-terminal semiconductor device that controls the flow of electric current by the movement of electrons. MOSFET terminal

  • Source
  • Drain
  • Gate

it is also known as metal–oxide–silicon transistor. MOSFET is similar to a p-n or n-p bipolar junction transistor in operation, except that it has a metal gate instead of a p-n junction and it is used in MOS technology. It is known for its high input impedance and low output impedance.

Mosfet was invented in 1959 by Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs, USA. Today it is the most widely used transistor and semiconductor device in the world.

However, the idea of making MOSFETs was taken from Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT). Which was made by William Shockley in 1947. MOSFET is also called the modern version or updated version of BJT.

What is Mosfet

It is responsible for controlling the power of computers and electronic circuits. On every desktop and laptop motherboard, you can see this.

The device amplifies and switches electrical signals. Its use is increasing day by day. Because we can use it in both analog and digital circuits. MOSFETs are now made using polysilicon instead of metal oxide.

Among other things, it can be used in power supply circuits, inverters, and in PWM (pulse with modulation). It can be seen as a part of the transistor itself. Additionally, these MOSFETs are available with 3 pins, 4 pins, and 8 pins.

Applications of MOSFET

  • Electronic devices are switched using MOSFETs.
  • They are used to boost electrical signals.
  • The use of it is in digital circuits.
  • An amplifier for high frequencies can be made using a MOSFET.
  • It can function as a passive component (resistor, inductor, and capacitor).
  • It is applicable to electronic DC relays.
  • It is suitable for switch mode power supplies (SMPS).
